Some of the major changes to the website design over the years:
1. Introduction of Web 2.0
2. Online tech support
3. E-commerce websites
4. Live chat support
5. Real Time store checking

As the world slides into web 2.0, you need to keep in your mind that your website needs to be updated to web 2.0. What exactly is web 2.0? This is a new dimension of website designing, which allows you to create accounts in that website, comment on the products, give some expert reviews and create wikis. From this website, you can select the product according to the reviews and ratings. Those products were purchased by customers similar to you and they have added a review on the product. This word-of-mouth marketing is more efficient than the commercials that are aired on TV and other Print Media.

Tech support is another customer convenience that ought to be present if you want to compete with your competitors. Customers may have trouble buying or using your product, they will open a ticket, or directly mail you. You take not more than 24 hours to reply and take care of her problem. She will be more than happy to suggest your website to her friends and relatives.

If you are present online with your business and you do not have an e-commerce business, then you are playing a losing hand. In an e-commerce website, customers, sees the products that you are selling, read the reviews, compares the product and the prices and eventually buy it online from your website. They pay you via credit card and you send them the product via mail. This is a very easy method and is a win-win situation for both the customer and the seller. They can shop sitting at home, and you get the contact information of your target client and have a database of the things he/she loves to buy. Later, when such things are for sale, you can easily drop the specifications of the items to them along with the price details, you will have a good chance that they may buy it.

Live chat support is crucial and a very convenient way of communication between the buyer and the seller. When you are online, they will ping you and ask you about your products and you can answer them. If they are facing any problem, you can solve their problem in real time. This process is like the tech support, but the only difference is, it is more effective.

What happens when someone purchases a product and only you find out that it is not available in the stores? Web 2.0 allows real-time store checking and you can get rid of that tension.
